Materia Quest Guide and Walkthrough

In FFXIV: A Realm Reborn, materia makes its return. Materia is originally from Final Fantasy 7, and worked much the same way. You could add it to weapons and gear for bonus stats. However in FF7 you could get spells and summons with materia. So far materia has only been used for bonus stats such as vitality, control, mind and so on.

Materia Quests:

Note! Any discipline of hand will get a crafting class quest from the crafting guild at level 20 that requires melding materia.
I wouldn’t recommend trying to run straight to the materia quest, or you may be disappointed. The first materia quest you get is part of the main scenario quest-line, and the third  materia quest requires at least one level 19 discipline of the hand, which can take some time to grind out.

The group of people you want to talk to about materia are at Central Thanalan, or you can follow the Main Scenario Quests until you get there.

NOTE: It also would be beneficial to level a weaver, leatherworker, or other armor repair class, since melding materia requires the repair class of that item.

1. Life, Materia, and Everything.
A level 19 quest. It is after Dressed to Deceive and located in Central Thanalan. This quest will get you introduced to using materia, but don’t run off yet! You need plenty more to get started.

2. Forging the Spirit. - Swynbroes
This quest will get you preparing materia. After completing “Forging the Spirit” you will be able to use action Materia Assimilating with spirit-bonded gear.

3. Waking the Spirit – Fhobhas
A level 19 quest, requires level 19 in a discipline of hand. Found next to Life, Materia, and Everything turn in location. After getting a level 19 or higher hand profession besides culinarian talk to ‘Fhobhas (x23 y23 Central Than) to obtains and turn in the quest. Afterward you will be given the ability to meld materia to gear by choosing the subcommand “meld” while selecting an item.
Also after completeing this quest you can return to its location to remove materia from gear by talking to Mutamix and selecting remove materia.

4. There is a fourth quest: Melding Materia Muchly, but requires a level 25 discipline of hand. It is given by Mutamix Bubblypots in Central Thanalan.

Creating Materia:

After completing the quest “Forging the Spirit” you will be able to use the action Materia Assimilating and assign it to your hotbar. This will allow you to break armor and weapons down into materia. You will get the associated materia depending on the type of equipment. All equipment turned into materia must have a %100 spirit-bond first.
(example: Bows turn into dexterity materia)

Melding Materia

After completing the quest “Waking the Spirits” you will be able to use the action Materia Melding and after selecting an item. Using materia (or melding) is easy once you have the proper repair discipline for that class, but painful to obtain. You may need a weaver, leatherworker, or armorer for your armor and a carpenter, goldsmith, or other for your weapon. But you have to have the proper catalysts converter to meld the materia to your gear, such as carbonized matter or dark matter.
